Patients often ask me for recommendations on a personal trainer that I’d recommend but being relatively new to the area, I truthfully have only personally met a handful that have my trust.

I sincerely do my best to find the right match but I will admit that it really takes a lot for me to trust a fitness professional with my patients.

The main reason for this? Continuing education and regard for movement quality.

So how, you ask, might you get on my referral list?

Well first and foremost, you need to have great communication skills and excellent client rapport. Most trainers have this and I commend you for it.

Secondly, you have to be good. Certifications mean little if a sound method to your system is lacking.

Finally, it is very important to be up to date with contemporary corrective exercise and post-rehabilitation principles. So for those of you in Alberta, let alone the Greater Edmonton area, here are a few must attend continuing education workshops.

Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance with Dr. Stu McGill

Functional Movement Screen Home Study Course

Training = Rehab, Rehab = Training with Dr. Charlie Weingroff

Aside from the above, it wouldn’t hurt to get the recently released Post Rehab Essentials resource by local strength coach, Dean Somerset. I’ll admit that this is an affiliate link but he is one strength coach in the area that has my utmost professional respect.

.

So if you’re a trainer in the area and are hungry for more clients, it will help quite a bit if we’re on the same page.

.

.

Muscle Imbalances Revealed – Upper Body

.

Last year, you may have read several of my reviews on Muscle Imbalances Revealed – Lower Body, a dvd package put together by some of the top experts in the fitness industry. Well this year, I’ve had the privilege to contribute to the newest version of this product, Muscle Imbalances Revealed – Upper Body. Together with Rick Kaselj, Tony Gentilcore and Dean Somerset, we have essentially put together everything – well not everything but a whole whack-load of information – you need to know about the core, thoracic spine, shoulder, neck and arm. But for those of you really interested in what I had to say, well you probably won’t be surprised. So let me give you a quick run down:

.

“Respiratory Control: Linking breathing with rehabilitation & training”

This was my main presentation where I talked about the following:

Nailing down your mobility and stability exercises with breathing

“Money moves” for improved breathing

The Stability-Motor Control Continuum

Assessment techniques

How to integrate breathing into movement

“Understanding Soft Tissue Management: Choosing the right tool”

This shorter presentation essentially discusses:

The mechanism behind soft tissue injuries

The 3 Phases of Healing

Who’s who soft tissue world

The “integr8r”

The role of the Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization in tissue recovery

The most effective ways to foam roll the upper body

.

But enough about me, what you really need to see is what the other guys had to say in Muscle Imbalances Revealed – Upper Body! Here are short clips from each of “the other guys’” presentations.

Now I’m really excited about what we’ve put together. I truly think that regardless of whether you’re a manual & rehabilitation therapist, fitness professional, or just someone who loves to train, that you’ll benefit greatly from this package. In fact, I actually think that your friends and colleagues will benefit as well (so please spread the word)! And the best part about it? You don’t have to spend your spouse’s hard earned money like I do and fly all over to get your con ed on. In fact, the cost is only $77.

Anyway…

…and thank you in advance for your continued support!

Although I was unable to attend Perform Better’s “A Meeting of the Minds” event several weeks ago, I have come across two very good summaries.

John D’Amico provided us with his summary on strengthcoach.com:

.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Chris Poirier and his staff at Perform Better for putting on one of the best conferences I have been to in years.

The team format of the conference allowed for great interaction between speakers and participants alike.

The conference topic “The Future” was terrific. Each speaker from Coach Boyle to John Berardi to Alwyn Cosgrove brought their A game to give us an idea where Strength and Conditioning, Fitness and Nutrition are heading in the next 10 years.

Some big picture take aways:

1. From programming to marketing, technology is and will grow as an integral part of your business.

2. Under no circumstance does the use of technology or electronic media come close to the importance of the 10 year, 10,000 hour rule. In other words you have to pay all the tolls on the turnpike to greatness.

3. Smaller is the wave in fitness. The day of the big box gym is over.

4. When opposing points of view are publically addressed the ensuing dialogue helps us assess the best path to take.

5. We work in an unusual business. What I mean is that by sharing ideas and information instead of hoarding make us all that much richer. Strength and Conditioning is not Apple vs Microsoft.

6. Succesful businesses will develop not just a destination for their clients but a culture that sustains the client.

7. Kids and Seniors are the wave of the future in fitness.

8. Plan to attend the next Meeting Of The Minds.

.

And Jason Glass provided a nice write up on his site as well.

.

Click on this image to read his summary

The topic of primitive patterns was discussed recently on strengthcoach.com. Naturally, DNS and the FMS were discussed but Casey Wheel pointed us members in the direction of BrainHighways.com.

Here’s what he had to say:

.

.

Now because I’m a huge fan of “training the brain”, I decided to look a little deeper. I feel that I have a good understanding of the work of Moseley, Cook, and Kolar but this is a prime example of not knowing what I didn’t know.

Here’s a closer look at Brain Highways.

.

.

.

Well now I know what I don’t know so it’s time for me to get after it.

Upon initial glance, this particular system and program seems to be relevant to anyone from health care professionals, to athletic development personnel, to teachers, and even to parents. I’m certainly going to put one foot in this door to take a sniff but hopefully, it’s aroma will be so pleasant that I’ll just have to dive in.

And once I do, I’ll be sure to give you my thoughts.

In the meantime, check out their blog. There are plenty of great reads!

For those of you that have been hiding under a rug in the last few months, let me direct you to a recently published article in the Strength and Conditioning Journal. This paper was written by Bret Contreras and Brad Schoenfeld and really looked into the literature on the topic of crunches.

“To Crunch or Not to Crunch”

No if you spend any time on the internet, you’ll know that this paper has been widely discussed. From Mike Robertson’s forum to T-Nation to Strength Coach.

Now I recently shared my two cents on core training through a webinar on Strength and Conditioning Webinars and Sports Rehab Expert but the above specifically discussed crunches.

Naturally, Dr. Stuart McGill recently had a few words to say so may I direct you to Dr. Snell’s awesome site, myrehabexercise.com. And while you’re at it, make sure you sign up for the site and use the referral code - promo46034. Click here for more information why.

Summary:

Here is a recent article that takes a deeper look at the obvious. McKean and colleagues utilized thirty upper year personal training students and personal trainers to examine 1) the timing and range of movement of the lumbar and sacral regions and 2) the influence of stance width, gender, and ascent / descent phases during the back squat exercise. Incorporating no load and 1.5 x body weight loaded trials, measurements from 3-D tracking devices placed on the above regions were evaluated for maximum lumbar and sacrum angles, the time at maximum lumbar and angles, maximum lumbar flexion angles, and the time at maximum lumbar flexion angles. Unsurprisingly, it was revealed that both men and women achieved a deeper squat position with wider stance (twice ASIS width) versus narrow stance (equal to ASIS width) positions. For those interested in the technical rationale, the reasoning behind this was lower maximum lumbar, sacrum and lumbar flexion angles leading to the ability to maintain more upright lumbar spine positions. Men and women, however, differed in movements and timing of maximums where men achieved maximum sacral angles sooner for both the ascent and descent phases of the squat in comparison with women who achieved earlier maximum lumbar angles in both phases. As a result, this modification in sacrum position and timing in men appears to allow them to accommodate for the known gender differences in pelvic girdle morphology. From a safety perspective, the above differences between the narrow and wider stance positions allow the lumbar spine to maintain a more upright position decreasing the load on the posterior structures of the spine. That said, kyphosis of the lumbar spine does occur during the deep squat although measurements were not collected beyond ASIS width.
