Here’s a good ready by Alwyn Cosgrove on Mastery of Your Craft.
Although specifically pertaining to the fitness industry, it falls along the same lines of one my guiding principles in patient management.
Not too long ago, I was really adamant about continuing my education in acupuncture however due to financial costs, I was unable to move forward.
That road block got me thinking.
If the opportunity to become adequately trained in this form of modality isn’t present, I might as well perfect the tool that I have. That is, my HANDS!
Since then, I have discovered that with a little bit of thinking, the use of the hands can be a powerful thing. Far too often, many therapists depend highly on external modalities (ultrasound, tens, acupuncture, spinal decompression, etc) and in my opinion, this is simply laziness. That is not to say that they are ineffective…in my opinion, just overused.
With a great deal of emphasis on the clinical assessment and a little adherence to sound principles of rehabilitation, you will find that the one modality handed to you at birth can be the most effective tool in your toolbox.
…something to think about.
